The Shell Petroleum Development Company Limited (SPDC) incorporated in 1937, is the oldest and largest producer of oil and gas in Nigeria. From 2002, it has been operating its EA field with the third largest FPSO in the world.

The Niger Delta, centre of the company’s activities, covers an area of 70,000 square kilometers, and is host to over 1500 communities with a population of between six and seven million spread across twelve major ethnic groups.

Shell has developed considerable natural gas production potentials and initiated a number of projects to harness its flared associated gas. It supplies over half the gas, some 450 million scf/d to the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas project, of which it is the technical leader and a major shareholder. To further boost gas utilisation, Shell Nigeria Gas was established in 1998 to supply gas to industries.

Shell was the first company to make a mark in Nigeria’s deep offshore. In I993, it opened new frontiers in Nigeria’s oil exploration with the birth of the Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCO), which was formed with some partners to operate deepwater blocks in depths of between 400 and 1400 metres. SPDC also plays a vital role in human resource development, employing over 5,000 people, 95 per cent of who are Nigerian.
