The CPU has seventeen semi-autonomous Sections operating under local Chairmen throughout the Commonwealth.

A CPU Section plays a very important role not only in its own country or region but also in its relationship with the CPU Secretariat in London. Most CPU Sections maintain a high profile in their country or region and will offer invaluable support to its members when the need arises.

For example, with regard to press freedom issues, a Section may be required to lobby on behalf of its members, in association with the Secretariat and there is no doubt that on some occasions, this has led to the successful solution of the problem.

As far as training is concerned, the assistance of a Section Chairman or Secretary with regard to the local coordination of a training course is vital to its success. We also call upon our Section Chairmen and Secretaries to advise us on key issues arising in the newspaper industry and we ask them to nominate people for our regional and Commonwealth activities.
