JUDGES

The judging will take place on Thursday 6 July 2007 and winners will be notified soon afterwards but an announcement will not be made until the first week of September.

The judges of the 2006/7 Photoawards are:

VANLEY BURKE
Vanley Burke has been living and working in Birmingham since 1965. He started to record the community around him in the late 1960's and has continued this personal journey to the present day. Burke's images represent a sensitive portrayal of people from Britain, Europe and South Africa. His understated photographs dispel myths and provide a rare and historically significant portrayal of local communities. Burke more recently has been documenting the Asian community and members of the Somali and Kurdish community who form part of the new generation of settlers in Birmingham. His work has been published widely across the world, and featured heavily in The Times, The Guardian, The New York Times, and more. Burke has featured in over 60 major exhibitions across in Britain, Europe, America and South Africa.

DAN CHUNG
After completing a Geography degree in Plymouth and a NCTJ in Photojournalism at Sheffield College, Dan Chung went on to work for the Derby Evening Telegraph, News Team Birmingham and Reuters, and is now a staff photographer at The Guardian where he has been for the past four years. Dan is particularly acclaimed for his work in Iraq in 2003; in Indonesia following the Tsunami in 2004; and in Pakistan in aftermath of the Earthquake in 2006. Of the photographs he produced during this time, Dan writes: 'I'm pleased with the work I've done lately in disaster areas such as those affected by the Tsunami, and when I was based in Pakistan. The idea that people might pause to think about an image that I've brought into the public domain, perhaps on the bus or the tube or over their lunch, is really rewarding'.
