'Giving with Spirit'
Noambhadi Lubisi, convenor of the Grahamstown District Women's Manyano, conjured a force of a spirit so strong that the walls shook with its presence. She addressed community members on the power of God and the spirit. What was important was what she achieved amongst her congregation as people went openly and prayed with vigour and feeling. Whether Christian or not there could be no denying the overwhelming sense of passion felt in the room. Hope was given to all present that no matter what life throws in their direction, there is always someone to lean on.
'Celebrating Culture'
Calling their ancestors. Grade 6 Samual Nsiko pupils, Cakuma Luyanda, Dyeshana Zandile, Singthatha Siphokazi, Mini Aphiwe and Ngxoela Phelisa, celebrated National Mother Tongue Day. This photo depicts a cultural practice where women training to become traditional healers consult with the ancestors in order to make a correct diagnosis. The traditional Xhosa culture is slowly dying with these younger generations. Celebrations of this kind help bring it alive again, where the youth are able to express themselves through their own heritage. The achievement lay in the fact that the youth embraced the opportunity and went to great lengths to learn more about who they were and where they came from.
'Mrs. George gets her house'
She was left alone, with no hope of the dignity a person her age deserves. Mrs Violet George battled for two and a half years against a bureaucratic system that left her to be the only remaining member of her once vibrant community. In December she was promised a new house with the community she was forced to live without, this dream was dashed when financial backing was taken back. Once again destitute she claimed she had lost all hope. Her hope was lifted when in April on Freedom Day she was told that she would be moving into her new home. "I am looking forward to sleeping without fear," was all she could say. The entire community followed the story and as a result Mrs George has very much needed support. She is photographed here, the proud owner of a new home.
