Rene Rossignaud, Malta
A very young girl waves her victory sign at me. She has finally achieved her destination (Europe). Little did she know that she would be on a plane in less than 48 hours traveling back home! Every summer Malta sees many boats full of illegal immigrants disembark on its shores in the hope of a better life. Most of them arrive with a massive smile on their faces thinking that they are in Italy. They are soon advised that this is Malta and not Italy and that an organized crime group who illegally transport these desperate people to the Maltese shores instead of Italy has robbed them of all their money. These poor souls pay every penny they have to travel to Europe in hope for a better life. Only less than 5% are given a refugee status in Malta, the rest are sent back home!
