Commonwealth Press Union
Founded in 1909, the name of the Press Union was changed to its current form in 1950. The CPU - one of the oldest pan-Commonwealth NGOs - exists to serve the special needs of the Commonwealth newspaper industry. The membes of the CPU are newspapers or newspaper groups which are represented with the organisation by their publishers, chief executives or editors. The functions of the CPU are principally to train and educate journalists in all aspects of running a newspaper - primarily in developing countries - and to lobby and campaign for press freedom.
We organise the Commonwealth Photographic Awards for many reasons, one of them being that we believe photography to be vital to the success of a newspaper. We hope that we will play a part in encouraging newspapers to use photographs more on their pages and young photographers to take better pictures. By supporting photographers - whether amateur or professional, young or old - we are encouraging an independent view, press freedom and democracy.

The Commonwealth Photographic Awards
The Commonwealth Photographic Awards were first launched in 1999. It is an open competition that can be entered by any Commonwealth national. The Awards offer a view of how people in the Commonwealth, with its mixture of races, creeds, cultures and ways of life, see themselves and others.
The growing popularity of this competition has meant that the number of entries has increased every year. These comprise of hugely diverse images which continue to improve in quality. The entries provide an eclectic mix, taking in nearly all of the 53 countries of the Commonwealth, from Canada to Cameroon, Kiribati to Kenya, Pitcairn Island to Pakistan, Trinidad to Tonga and the United Kingdom to Uganda.
Each year a different theme has been explored, and entrants write a short caption to explain the significance of their photos. The judges take into consideration both composition and the interpretation of the theme. The captions are displayed alongside the winning images whenever shown in an exhibition.
