The photograph shows youth in all its variety and individuality. The picture presents a class of students touring the Tate Modern Gallery.
They are looking with varying degrees of interest, at something, which the viewer cannot see; they are discovering and exploring. Although they are dressed in uniform, they are anything but uniform. Each child is standing in a unique stance, expressing his or her particular personality.
The one boy looking back at the viewer captures the ambiguous essence of youth: is he curious, defensive, frightened? There is also an interesting 'where's Waldo' effect that takes place in the photograph - it is difficult to ascertain the exact number of students on first glance. Like the nature of youth, the students are layered and often disguised, attached to or partially obscured by a peer.
