Joe P Smith, Malta
This picture was taken in July 2003 in the southern part of Malta, an area known as The Three Cities. It comprises the three walled towns of Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea. These young people are swimming in Senglea and the town in the background is Vittoriosa.
I was immediately attracted to the adventurous antics of these teenagers. I parked my car and asked if I could take some pictures. They not only obliged, but also intensified their efforts. I am fond of this shot because it epitomises the joy and carefree attitude that is associated with youth.
The exact spot where these young people are swimming is actually a slipway, and their homes are just across the road. Many locals are boat owners and, as can be seen from the piers in the background, the foreshore of Vittoriosa is being developed into a yacht marina. This doesn't put these young people off from returning to their favourite playground.
