This image of a boy with a toy gun was taken in Helenvale, a notorious suburb in the so-called 'coloured' area of Port Elizabeth. Nicknamed 'Katanga' the suburb has a history steeped in gang violence.

Unemployment is high and gangs made up of boys and young men rob, deal drugs and kill. Children in Helevale are forced to adapt - many aspire to be gangsters and many are killed by stray bullets.
