Soh Kian Leong Darren, Singapore
This image was photographed near the River Buriganga in Dhaka, Bangladesh in July 2003. These kids were simply hanging out by the river in the evening. Some were playing an improvised version of cricket.
I approached them and because of my skin colour, I became a natural magnet. They followed me around wherever I went on the riverbank, and when they found out I was taking pictures, they all wanted their pictures taken.
I later found out that many of these children were street kids who have neither seen a foreigner nor a camera and as a result, many had never been photographed in their lives - you can see this in the enthusiasm on their faces. Following my visit, the NYAA of Singapore initiated a community project for the street kids of Bangladesh.
