UK / Australian walks away with top photo prize
First prize (£2000) for the 2001 Commonwealth Photographic Awards went to Australian resident and UK citizen Alistair McNaughton.
Alistair was born in Surrey, England and immigrated to Australia in 1981. His photograph was taken on a river amidst the belching smokestacks of a brick kiln in Southern Bangladesh.

The photo illustrates how peace and tranquility of everyday life is destroyed by man's greed. Everything is technically and creatively captured in this photograph and that is very rare in a picture," explains Ray Lowe, after agreeing unanimously with the other two judges on what separated the winning photo from all the others.
The Awards drew over 700 entries from 40 Commonwealth countries and each shared various photographic perceptions relating to the theme "environment".
Second prize went to Bangladesh photographer, Shafiqul Kiron with third prize going to Guy Harrison of the Cayman Islands.
