Europe

The newspaper industry of the UK was once the finest in the world.  Times have changed somewhat but it is still the aspirational level for many countries.  In the BBC, the UK probably had the finest public sector broadcasting organ in the world and its fame is global.  World Service in particular is often seen as the only station to hear unbiased international news - particularly overseas, when during internal troubles it is often the only way of finding out what is going on.  Al Jazeera and the cable channels have proved a significant challenge to the BBC, but to date, it still reigns supreme.

Malta, Gibraltar and Cyprus all have a vibrant media sector.  Gibraltar is noteworthy for having one of the oldest papers in Europe in The Chronicle which was started in the early 801.
