Australia and New Zealand

The media in both Australia and New Zealand is a significant economic sector. Access to television, radioand newspapers is almost universal and the newspaper industry is respected and long established.

In Australia, the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) is a highly regarded public service broadcaster with a long and venerable history but it now has to fight for its place alongside many commercial and pay to view stations.  Because of the vast distances involved in Australia, radio has long been a key communications tool and all households have at least one radio.

New Zealand once had several daily newspapers in each major city, but times have changed in the face of competition from other media  and each city now only has one daily newspaper. There are no truly national newspapers although The New Zealand Herald and to a lesser extent The Dominion Post are both available outside their core areas.  The Otago Daily Times, based in Dunedin in the South Island, is the oldest surviving daily newspaper in New Zealand.  The Gisborne Herald is the daily evening newspaper for Gisborne and its environs.  These are two of only four independently owned daily newspapers in New Zealand.
