For over three decades, women's rights activists and those working for women's empowerment in the academic, international and voluntary fields, have used various approaches to define their work.

These have included:

'Women in Development' which focused on women's inclusion in the development process.

This was replaced by the 'Gender and Development (GAD)' approach, which looked more at the social relationship between men and women.

Then the focus moved towards 'Gender Equality' which encompasses the roles of both men and women in society and the extent of men's control over resources and decision making.
