The Astor Award

The Commonwealth Broadcasting Association's Awards

Commonwealth Essay Competition
If you are 18 years of age or younger, why not enter the Commonwealth Essay Competition, and pit your writing skills against students of the same age around the world? There are lots of prizes - and you may even get your essay published.

Commonwealth Photographic Awards
This is an open competition for all Commonwealth residents whatever their profession. Each year there is a different theme and the entrants are asked to write a short caption explaining why they think their photos is are significant.
The next Awards will be announced in early 2006.

Commonwealth Secretariat Internship
Every year, two young journalists are offered five-month internships in the Communications and Public Affairs Department of the Commonwealth Secretariat headquarters of the Commonwealth in London. The internships usually commence in July and then again in early in the New Year.

Commonwealth Vision Awards
Open to broadcasters and independent programme makers within the Commonwealth, the Awards recognise excellence in the making of a short film on a designated Commonwealth theme.

The CPQ/Rolls-Royce Words & Images Award
'The Forgotten Commonwealth'

CPQ has linked up with Rolls-Royce plc, a name synonymous with excellence, to launch a unique Commonwealth journalism award.

The aim of this new award is to bridge a divide that still exists in much journalism around the Commonwealth and fuse the complementary crafts of writing and photo-journalism into one. Most journalism award schemes salute either written work or photographic or graphic art. The CPQ/Rolls-Royce Words & Images Award unites and celebrates them in one accolade.

The CPU Fellowship in International Journalism
Commonwealth journalist is awarded the CPU Fellowship in order to complete a postgraduate Masters in International Journalism at the Graduate Centre for Journalism at City University, London, England. All applicants must be working full-time for a newspaper in membership of the CPU. (www.city.ac.uk)

The Dag Hammarskjold Fellowships
The Dag Hammarskjold fellowships offer a unique opportunity for promising young journalists from Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America to see the United Nations at work and to report on its proceedings for news media in their home countries.

Excellence in Distance Education Awards (EDEA)
The Commonwealth of Learning's Excellence in Distance Education Awards (EDEA) includes four categories, acknowledging excellence occurring at the overall institutional level, in the development of learning materials, of a lifetime's work as an educator and in student accomplishment.

Gordon N Fisher Fellowship
Organised by Massey College, University of Toronto. Awarded to journalists with five years experience in full time employment of a newspaper, magazine, or news agency in the New Commonwealth or developing countries. One Fellow each year is selected by the Commonwealth Press Union. He/she must be working full-time for a newspaper that is in membership of the CPU.

Harry Brittain Fellowship
Organised by the Commonwealth Press Union. Awarded to ten to twelve senior journalists and editors working for newspapers in membership of the CPU, and aged from 28 to 38. They spend six weeks in the UK, learning how the British media functions and examining its political, economic and social infrastructures. Applicants must be working full-time for newspapers that are in membership of the CPU.
